Nato in Sierra Leone nel 1974, Leonard Bundu, per sfuggire alla guerra civile scoppiata nel paese nei primi anni novanta, si trasferisce nella città natale della madre, Firenze.
Qui, sotto la guida del maestro Alessandro Boncinelli, allenatore principale dell’Accademia Pugilistica Fiorentina, Leonard Bundu inizia a praticare la boxe, diventando ben presto un buon pugile amatoriale e ottenendo un posto nella squadra italiana per le Olimpiadi di Sydney del 2000. Sconfitto al secondo turno del torneo olimpico decide di interrompere la pratica del pugilato.
Nel 2005, dopo una pausa di quattro anni, ricomincia ad allenarsi e a combattere da professionista collezionando una serie consecutiva di vittorie che lo portano, nel 2011, a scontrarsi con Daniele Petrucci per il titolo europeo dei pesi welter.Ottenuta la corona, difende il titolo in altri sei incontri, l’ultimo contro Frankie Gavin, pugile di dieci anni più giovane e, fino all’incontro, imbattuto.
Ora “il Leone” si allena per il match di Las Vegas contro la giovane promessa (classe 1988) Keith “One Time” Thurman, valevole per il titolo mondiale ad interim WBA dei pesi welter.
